NORTH CENTRAL LIBRARY CHARITY

Ladies and Gentleman!

.....Sorry about the delay in this announcement. Here is the NEW North Central Regional Charity Event:

Dates: Now (August 18th) through October 31st

What: Library Book Drive!!!!!

Here's how this works - Go through your bookshelf and look for duplicates or books that a library might really like to have. Think of any library (public, school, military, college, private) that you can donate to and what they might need. If you don't have the books on your shelf, go find out what the library needs and buy it for them!!!!!

Why are we doing this? Good question! Most libraries lack funding. That's not to say they can't buy some of the materials patrons are looking for, but they are on a budget, just like everyone else. Donating books can really help them build collections to give more choices or help reconstruct collections that have been lost by fire, flood and other disasters. (Books don't tend to like these things.)

Just a note, there are some materials that are discouraged. I have spoken to several librarians and will explain why these materials are discouraged. Just remember, libraries are a place of resource so you can look information up or borrow it without having to buy it. You would want some newer stuff too, wouldn't you?

Most paperbacks are NOT likely to be used by a library. I am certain they have a copy of "Jurassic Park" and they probably don't need another copy of any Danielle Steele book. If these kinds of books are donated, they are not put on the shelves. I couldn't get a clear answer on where they go (but I am fairly certain no good book lover could put any book in the trash.)

Damaged books should not be donated please. If you can't read it or sneeze from the mold, so will the patron checking the book out.

Textbooks - this may vary by library (academic libraries may be different) but if your school didn't buy them back then a patron won't read it.

Bound "Reader's Digest" books or magazine compilations. These are just magazines smooshed together that library probably already has. Even if it is a collection of the 1953 Good Housekeeping, I am certain there is a resource that already exists there.

So, what's it worth in prestige?

Used books in good condition: 2R
Brand New Book that the Library Wants: 5R
Used CD or DVD in good condition: 2R
Brand New CD or DVD: 5R
Volunteering at the Library for Anything it needs! 5R per hour

Why are you seeing CD's, DVD's and volunteer time? Libraries are a source of many different materials. In a digital age this includes new movies, books on CD and music. So, in advocating our libraries, I will not close these options down. In addition, I know that libraries sometimes need an extra hand (due to lack of budget and lack of staffing) so I will not turn down volunteer hours. This could be children's reading programs or just shelving stuff. It can be really fun and you can learn some of the secrets of your library!

Can't think of what to donate? Call your local library and ask them what they are looking for!
